What changed in boneIO ESP firmware and YAML configurations, release by release

This page lists what changes in boneIO ESP firmware and in the public YAML configurations, newest release first. Each change says who it affects:

  • Factory firmware — a controller running the firmware it shipped with or the one from the installer at boneio.eu/esp. The new version arrives through the Firmware entity in Home Assistant; you don't have to copy anything.
  • YAML configuration — a change in the controller's public file. If you adopted the controller in ESPHome Builder, your copy of the configuration won't get it: copy the change yourself and compile the firmware.

The full history is in the boneIO-eu/esphome repository.

2026.10.1-b6

YAML configuration — Dimmer LED v0.3 (8 channels, 2× RGBW, 4× CCT):

  • One press toggled the light twice. Inputs IN_05–IN_08 are wired straight to ESP32 pins, and ESPHome reads them with interrupts by default, which catch every contact bounce. IN_01–IN_04 sit on the PCF8574 expander and never had this problem. The fix for IN_05–IN_08:

    binary_sensor:
      - platform: gpio
        name: 'IN_05'
        id: in_05
        use_interrupt: false
        pin:
          number: 36

    The same for in_06 (pin 39), in_07 (34) and in_08 (35). If that isn't enough, add the filters delayed_on: 30ms and delayed_off: 30ms.

  • Hostname sensor removed — it didn't work. It comes back once fixed.

  • Firmware upload through the browser removed (it had no password), as on the other controllers since 2026.10.1-b1. Remove - platform: web_server from the ota section of your configuration.

2026.10.1-b5

Factory firmware:

  • 32x10, Cover and Cover Mix v0.5/v0.6 get a single firmware from the installer — Switches + web panel (Cover: Web panel) — with no Firmware variant list. The YAML files for these versions stay in the repository for adoption.
  • Version v0.7 is now called v0.7+ in the installer — the same firmware runs on v0.8 and v0.9 controllers.

2026.10.1-b4

Factory firmware:

  • One Firmware variant list in Home Assistant instead of separate Dimmer mode and Web panel lists. The options match the installer, e.g. "Lights" / "Lights + web panel". See Changing the firmware variant.

2026.10.1-b3

YAML configuration — Dimmer LED gen2:

  • Local control. An input toggles the channel with the same number: 8 channels IN_01–IN_08, 2× RGBW IN_01–IN_02, 4× CCT IN_01–IN_04. The Local control switch turns this off. Before, Dimmer gen2 inputs didn't toggle anything — if you have Home Assistant automations on these inputs, turn Local control off, otherwise the light toggles twice.

Factory firmware:

  • A Web panel list in Home Assistant turns the device page on and off (replaced by the Firmware variant list in b4).

2026.10.1-b2

YAML configuration — 32x10, 8x10A gen2, Cover, Cover Mix:

  • Local control switch. When it is off, inputs don't switch outputs on the controller and only report their state to Home Assistant. Every on_press/on_release action of the inputs now has a condition:

    switch:
      - platform: template
        id: local_control
        name: Local control
        icon: mdi:gesture-tap-button
        entity_category: config
        optimistic: true
        restore_mode: RESTORE_DEFAULT_ON

    binary_sensor:
      - platform: gpio
        name: 'IN_01'
        # ...
        on_press:
          - if:
              condition:
                switch.is_on: local_control
              then:
                - light.toggle: light_01

    See Local control.

2026.10.1-b1

ESPHome 2026.10.1.

Factory firmware:

  • Updates from Home Assistant through the Firmware entity. The controller checks for them after every start and every 6 hours. Older controllers get this entity after flashing the firmware from the installer once.
  • Encrypted connection to Home Assistant — Home Assistant sets the key on first connection.
  • Device page only on request — the + web panel option in the installer.
  • Dimmer gen2: switching the mode (8 channels, 2× RGBW, 4× CCT) from Home Assistant.
  • The installer offers to erase the device during installation.

Details: Security.

YAML configuration — all controllers on sale:

  • Firmware upload through the browser removed (it had no password). Remove from your configuration:

    ota:
      - platform: web_server
  • Configurations of discontinued controllers (24x16, Dimmer LED v0.3) moved to the discontinued/ folder and still get firmware.

2026.8.1-b1

ESPHome 2026.8.1, boneIO packages v2.1.0.

2026.5.3-b1

ESPHome 2026.5.3.

YAML configuration:

  • 32x10, Cover, Cover Mix and 24x16: the Modbus pins (GPIO14, GPIO15) are reset at startup, and RX has a pull-up in the commented-out uart example — without this, Modbus could fail to work.
  • 24x16: missing id for inputs in_33, in_34, in_35.
