System and Installation Requirements
Check what you need for proper installation and startup of boneIO Edge series devices, including wiring topology and recommended components.
Before you begin installation, review the requirements below. This will ensure a smooth configuration process for your boneIO Edge devices and allow you to take advantage of all their features.
Addressing????
1. Electrical Requirements
This is the most important section, crucial for safety and proper device operation.
- Power Supply: Edge series devices are powered by low voltage, i.e., depending on the device, 5-24V DC. The power supply should have adequate current capacity.
- Installation Location: Unlike the "large" boneIO devices, Edge devices can be installed outside the control cabinet area.
Wiring Topology
Proper wiring layout is the foundation of a stable system.
- 5-24 VDC Power Installation: Power circuits for Edge devices can be run in either a bus or star topology. This means each circuit in the power area can be routed with a separate cable directly from the distribution panel to the endpoint, or in series as a bus. Keep in mind the potential voltage drop if the power supply is also in a bus configuration.
- Recommended Cable for Edge Devices: We recommend using twisted pair cable (e.g., Cat 5e or Cat 6) for connection.
- Communication — Modbus RTU, ISO 11898-2 Compliant Interface: Edge series devices use wiring for communication that must be run in a bus (daisy-chain) topology.
- Separation from Power Cables (Avoiding Interference): To ensure error-free communication and system stability, strictly avoid running signal cables (Modbus, ISO 11898-2 compliant interface) parallel to 230V power cables.
- Maintain a minimum distance of 30 cm when running in parallel.
- If cable routes must cross, do so only at a right angle (90°).
IMPORTANT: PROFESSIONAL INSTALLATION REQUIRED
In accordance with applicable regulations and to ensure full safety, all electrical installation work must be performed exclusively by a qualified electrician with appropriate certifications. Although Edge series devices are powered by so-called safe voltage, they are in the direct vicinity of dangerous 230V AC voltage!
2. Network Requirements
A network connection is not required for basic operation but is essential for configuration and remote control.
to change address etc.
- LAN Connection: A free Ethernet port on your router or switch is required for operation.
- Wi-Fi Connection (optional): Access to a 2.4 GHz wireless network.
- Router Access: Ability to log into the router's admin panel to find the controller's IP address.
Tip for construction time: Don't have your final internet connection yet? No problem. The controller does not require a permanent network connection for basic operation. For remote management and on-site configuration, simply create a temporary Wi-Fi hotspot on your phone and connect the controller to it.
3. Required Tools
- Precision screwdriver, wire stripper, side cutters.
- Ferrule crimping tool.
- Multimeter.
- Computer or phone for configuration.
4. System Requirements
Edge series devices operate based on open serial communication protocols, working right out of the box, allowing immediate cooperation with other boneIO devices.
-
Recommended Platform: boneIO Black, boneIO ESP Configuration of Edge series devices ??? Home Assistant, as it supports auto-discovery for boneIO Black devices, making integration seamless.
-
Other Platforms You can integrate with any other system (such as openHAB, Domoticz, etc.) by manually configuring MQTT entities based on the topics provided in the device documentation.
5. Required Skills
- User: Basic computer skills and understanding of networking and the MQTT protocol.
- Installer (Electrician): Full qualifications for working with electrical installations, ability to read schematics, and knowledge of safety principles.
